The MJ Stanilla Pavilion

A pavilion for the summer camp staff, built in memory of Michael "MJ" Stanilla Jr. on the foundation of a shower house that had sat empty for thirty years.

Date
April 1, 2024

In late November 2023 the Scouting community lost Michael “MJ” Stanilla Jr., who died of health complications at the age of 23. His family donated memorial funds to Friends of Camp Mack to be used in his honor.

In early spring 2024 we built him a pavilion.

Where it stands

The MJ Pavilion sits behind the Staff Site, on the foundation of the old Staff Shower House — a slab that had sat empty for close to thirty years. Rather than pour new concrete, the project reused what was already there.

It gives the summer camp staff somewhere to hold meetings and training out of the weather, and somewhere to wind down after a long, hot day. It is available year round, and is used by Scouts, by the archers, and by our own members.

Who paid for it

Individual and corporate memorial gifts made in MJ’s name, a large donation from Archers for Scouts, a matching grant from a local donor, and Friends of Camp Mack’s own funds.

MJ’s time at Camp Mack was far too short. His legacy of leadership and service to this place carries on in a building the staff use every week of the summer.
